We are seeking a dedicated and approachable Student Support Officer to join our team and play a key role in supporting students’ academic progress, wellbeing and overall experience at the College.
The Role
As Student Support Officer, you will be a key point of contact for students, providing practical, pastoral and welfare support throughout their time at the College. You will work closely with academic staff, management, parents/guardians and relevant external professionals to ensure that students receive appropriate support and are able to achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day pastoral and welfare support to students.
- Act as a first point of contact for student concerns, queries and support needs.
- Monitor student attendance, engagement and general wellbeing, identifying concerns at an early stage.
- Support students experiencing personal, social, academic or other barriers to learning.
- Develop positive and professional relationships with students and encourage their independence and confidence.
- Liaise with teaching staff and College management regarding student progress, attendance, behaviour and welfare.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student support and interventions.
- Signpost or refer students to appropriate specialist services where required.
- Support the induction and orientation of new students.
- Assist international students with settling into College life and understanding College procedures and expectations.
- Help promote positive behaviour, equality, inclusion and a respectful College environment.
- Contribute to student activities, enrichment programmes and initiatives that promote student wellbeing.
- Follow College safeguarding, child protection, health and safety and confidentiality procedures.
- Report safeguarding concerns promptly in accordance with College policies.
- Participate in meetings, training and professional development activities.
- Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role.
Person Specification
We are looking for an individual who is:
- Experienced in student services, pastoral support, education, welfare or a related environment.
- Passionate about supporting young people and helping them achieve their potential.
- An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal and active-listening skills.
- Approachable, empathetic, patient and able to build trust with students.
- Well organised, reliable and able to manage competing priorities.
- Confident working independently as well as part of a wider team.
- Able to maintain professional boundaries and handle confidential information appropriately.
- Comfortable dealing with challenging or sensitive situations.
- Knowledgeable about safeguarding and student welfare.
- Competent in using Microsoft Office and other relevant digital systems.
Desirable
- Experience working within a college, school, university or international education setting.
- Experience supporting international students.
- Relevant qualification in education, counselling, youth work, student services, welfare or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and UK education-sector requirements.
- Experience of monitoring attendance and student engagement.
